Fort Nelson black bear killed following reports of human-wildlife conflict

A food-conditioned male black bear was killed by the BC Conservation Officer Service in Fort Nelson, British Columbia, on August 19. The bear had reportedly lost its fear of humans, frequently approaching residential areas to access garbage bins and fruit trees.

In response to the incident, local resident Carmella Louis has launched a petition calling for mandatory bear-proofing and more stringent attractant management policies. Residents have expressed concerns regarding the safety of children and the increasing habituation of bears in the community.

Conservation officers have advised the public to remove all potential attractants, including pet food, fallen fruit, and barbecues, to reduce human-bear conflicts as animals prepare for winter hibernation.
