Helena's death in Fortaleza reclassified as asphyxia homicide
A 10‑month‑old baby, Helena Almeida, died in Fortaleza, Ceará, on 13 July 2026. Initial medical reports from a private hospital suggested possible sexual violence, leading to the arrest of two men, Francisco Ray Magalhães (22) and his cousin Roberto Levy Magalhães (26), on suspicion of stupro de vulnerável seguido de morte.
On 17 July 2026 the State Forensic Laboratory (Pefoce) released its final autopsy. The report found no semen, no genetic material from the suspects, no alcohol or drugs in the child's blood, and a sexological exam confirmed the absence of sexual abuse. The cause of death was determined to be indirect mechanical asphyxia. Consequently, the police investigation was redirected from sexual‑assault homicide to homicide culpable (no intent to kill). The two suspects remain in preventive detention while investigators seek to establish how the asphyxia occurred and who was responsible.
