Fortaleza drug policy fair advocates for social justice
During the second edition of the Febre de Arte fair in Fortaleza, speakers advocated for drug policies rooted in social justice. Participants at the Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura urged voters to elect politicians who demonstrate clarity on drug issues to ensure the development of viable and relevant proposals.
Magda Almeida, a family physician and professor at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), addressed the ideological tendency to label cannabis as purely harmful. She noted that Black and poor populations are disproportionately affected by the drug war in Brazil. Almeida also discussed the medical potential of cannabis to mitigate conditions like epilepsy, anxiety, and fibromyalgia, which are often treated with pregabalin, a medication that can cause side effects such as memory loss and mood changes.
Data from Blis Data, a major provider of medicinal cannabis user data in Latin America, indicates that the primary consumers of imported medicinal cannabis in Brazil are older, employed women seeking relief from chronic pain and sleep disorders.
