Fortescue Metals Group fires senior executive following harassment probe
Fortescue Metals Group, one of Australia’s largest mining companies, has terminated a senior executive following an independent investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and bullying. The probe, conducted by law firm MinterEllison, substantiated claims that the unnamed executive breached company policies and values.
The investigation, which began in July, was overseen by a board subcommittee. Fortescue, a major iron ore exporter based in Perth, stated it is committed to maintaining a safe and inclusive workplace for all employees and contractors.
In a separate development, the company is facing a class-action lawsuit in the Federal Court. The lawsuit alleges widespread sexual harassment, violence, and discrimination against women at Fortescue’s iron ore mining operations in the Pilbara region. The legal action includes testimonials from women detailing various incidents of alleged misconduct.
