Fortis Healthcare to install India’s first upright proton therapy system

Fortis Healthcare, a subsidiary of the IHH Healthcare group, has announced plans to install the MEVION S250-FIT Proton Therapy System at the Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI) in Gurugram. This installation is intended to make FMRI the first healthcare facility in India to introduce an upright proton therapy system and the first to host a Leo Cancer Care system.

The technology integrates Mevion Medical Systems' compact proton accelerator with Leo Cancer Care’s Marie upright patient positioning and CT imaging platform, alongside RaySearch Laboratories' RayStation treatment planning software. Unlike conventional radiation therapy that uses X-rays, proton therapy delivers doses directly to tumors with minimal exit radiation, reducing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues.

The upright positioning system allows patients to be treated in a seated position in front of a fixed beam rather than lying on a table under a rotating gantry. This approach is designed to improve precision for adult and pediatric cancers, particularly for tumors located near sensitive structures like the brain, spinal cord, heart, and lungs.
