FortisBC aerial inspections gas leak detection LiDAR mapping British Columbia

FortisBC is conducting aerial inspections of its high-pressure gas transmission lines across 23 regions in British Columbia to ensure system safety and reliability. The inspections, which began on September 14, involve low-flying helicopters performing light detection and ranging (LiDAR) mapping.

Contracted companies Ascent Helicopters and LaSen Inc. are utilizing LiDAR technology to scan the lines. This method uses laser beams to detect gas plumes; if a beam passes through a plume from a potential leak, the reflected energy is diminished, allowing technicians to locate and assess the issue. FortisBC states the system is 98 per cent accurate and can detect leaks as small as five parts per million.

The aerial surveys are described as a more cost-effective and safer alternative to traditional foot inspections, covering larger areas in less time. Transport Canada has permitted the low-altitude flights, which are scheduled to cover Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland throughout September.
