Fortress Investment Group explores takeover of Poundland

Fortress Investment Group, the owner of Poundstretcher, is in early-stage discussions regarding a potential takeover of Poundland. The deal follows an auction launched by Poundland’s owner, Gordon Brothers, to sell the discount retailer.

A successful transaction could merge Poundland’s approximately 600 stores with Poundstretcher’s nearly 300 locations, creating a major UK discount retail group with roughly 900 stores and 15,000 employees. While a merger of the two brands is not currently under consideration, the combination could lead to job risks and store closures where the two estates overlap.

Other potential suitors for Poundland include Modella Capital, owner of TGJones, as well as various strategic and financial investors. A management buyout is also being explored. Gordon Brothers aims to finalize a sale before the Christmas trading period, with initial bids expected in early October. Alvarez & Marsal has been appointed to oversee the auction process.
