Forum for Arctic Research urges unified polar research program

The Forum for Arctic Research (FAF) is calling for Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands to establish a unified, large-scale polar research program to strengthen their scientific position in the Arctic and Antarctic.

Ole Hertel, chairman of the forum and associate dean at Aarhus University, emphasized the need for a coordinated effort ahead of the 2032 International Polar Year. He noted that Norway has already begun preparing by establishing a secretariat and allocating 1 billion NOK to marine polar research. The FAF recommends that the Kingdom of Denmark establish a similar committee and secretariat, supported by a significant three-digit million investment.

The push for increased research comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions and climate change, which are opening new sea routes and increasing interest in critical minerals. Researchers argue that a cohesive program is necessary to maintain presence and scientific relevance as global powers like Russia, China, and the United States increase their focus on the region.
