Forward Deployed Engineer emerges to bridge AI deployment gap

The rise of the Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) marks a shift in the artificial intelligence industry from model development to practical implementation. As AI models become more accessible and affordable, companies are facing a ‘deployment gap’—the difficulty of connecting models to real-world corporate data, legacy systems, and security requirements.

An FDE is a software or AI engineer who works directly within a client’s environment to ensure AI products function in production. Unlike traditional roles, FDEs are responsible for writing production-ready code, navigating internal client politics and security, and transforming commercial promises into measurable value after a contract is signed.
