Fotomuseum Winterthur hosts retrospective of Helen Levitt
The Fotomuseum Winterthur is presenting the first retrospective of American photographer Helen Levitt, featuring her comprehensive body of work alongside her recently accessible archive. The exhibition, titled ‘Helen Levitt – Die Strasse als Bühne’, will run from October 24, 2026, to January 31, 2027.
The showcase includes more than 200 photographs spanning half a century, the 1948 documentary short film ‘In the Street’, color slide projections, and approximately 115 pieces of ephemera and archival materials. Visitors can view various formats, including early silver gelatin prints, dye-transfer prints, and previously unpublished contact sheets.
Levitt (1913–2009), a Brooklyn native, was a pioneering figure in American street photography, particularly noted for her depictions of urban life and children in East Harlem and the Lower East Side. The traveling exhibition is organized by Fundación Mapfre and is scheduled to visit other international locations, including Barcelona, Madrid, Rotterdam, and Berlin.
