Łukasz Litewka: Copyright dispute and memorial park announcement

Following the death of Polish politician Łukasz Litewka in a road accident, a controversy has emerged regarding copyright claims on his portrait. Photographer Jagoda Owczarek has issued payment demands to various non-profit organizations and private individuals who used her photograph in social media posts to honor the deceased. The claims, which can reach up to 2,000 PLN, include compensation for copyright infringement and failure to credit the author.

Owczarek released a statement explaining that her intention was not to profit from the tragedy or the mourning of Litewka’s loved ones, but to highlight the issue of creators' rights and the unauthorized use of their work. She noted that even widely available images remain the intellectual property of the creator. The photographer also addressed the wave of online hostility and personal attacks she has received following the dispute.

In a separate development, city councilors in Sosnowiec have approved a resolution to name a new four-hectare park after Łukasz Litewka. The initiative, located on Białostocka Street, was made in consultation with Litewka’s family, who support the tribute. The park is planned to include an orchard, flower meadows, walking paths, and a cycling track.
