Foupana Dam project enters public consultation in Algarve

The environmental impact study for the proposed Foupana Dam is currently undergoing public consultation until October 12. Located in the municipalities of Alcoutim and Castro Marim within the Faro district, the project is promoted by the Associação de Beneficiários do Plano de Rega do Sotavento do Algarve (ABPRSA).

The infrastructure is designed to reinforce water availability in the Algarve region by integrating with the Odeleite-Beliche system. The project includes the construction of the dam, a connecting tunnel, and necessary access routes. Estimated costs for the project range between 150 and 200 million euros.

Following an analysis of three alternatives, the project will proceed with a location described as the most environmentally favorable. This specific option was chosen because it results in a smaller reservoir area, minimizes the impact on land use, habitats, and vegetation, and maintains a greater distance from protected areas such as the Guadiana Special Conservation Zone.
