Meghalaya: Four Assam labourers die in septic tank gas leak
Four migrant construction labourers from Assam's South Salmara-Mankachar district died after inhaling suspected toxic gases in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district. The incident occurred at a residence in Rangdokram village while the workers were performing construction tasks on a newly built underground septic tank.
According to preliminary reports, two labourers collapsed immediately upon attempting to open the tank's lid. Two other workers who rushed to assist them also succumbed to the fumes. During the rescue operation, two members of the Fire and Emergency Services lost consciousness due to gas exposure but were later treated and regained consciousness.
Investigators believe the deaths were caused by the accumulation of hazardous gases, such as methane or hydrogen sulphide, due to inadequate ventilation or the lack of a proper gas outlet. Local police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation.
