Four Brazilian activists detained in Iceland over whale‑hunting protest
Four Brazilian men were taken into custody by the Icelandic Coast Guard and special police forces after their vessel, the activist ship Bandero, was intercepted while conducting a peaceful anti‑whale‑hunting operation (Operation 86) near Iceland. The boarding occurred in international waters beyond Iceland’s 12‑nautical‑mile limit and involved the Icelandic patrol ship Freyja, helicopters and drones. The detainees – Vitor Young (32, Santos), Lucas Barbosa (28, Craíbas, Alagoas), Victor Calixto (23, Ilhabela) and Rui Amorim (52, Fortaleza) – have been held since July 31, with the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs monitoring the case and offering consular assistance. The protest targeted Iceland’s commercial fin‑whale hunt, one of the few remaining such programs worldwide. Sea Shepherd Brazil and the Captain Paul Watson Foundation have demanded urgent diplomatic intervention, contesting the legality of the Icelandic operation and noting that the activists were unable to contact their families for several days. Icelandic authorities claim some crew members lacked proper entry authorization, while the activist groups maintain the boarding violated international law.
