Üsküdar Municipality faces corruption probe and political crisis

Üsküdar Municipality is facing a severe political and legal crisis following the arrest and removal of Mayor Sinem Dedetaş. The Istanbul Anadolu Chief Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating allegations of bribery, extortion, and irregularities regarding building permits and occupancy licenses.

MASAK reports suggest that approximately 361,392,264 TL was obtained from contractors through sham consultancy contracts involving the municipality's subsidiary, Kent AŞ. As part of the investigation, Deputy Mayor Amine Cansu Çelik, Licensing Manager Burak Aydın, and operator Erdem Koyunyerli have been arrested.

The political landscape has shifted significantly as four CHP municipal council members resigned to join the AK Party, equalizing the council's seat distribution at 21-21. Meanwhile, the CHP and YENİ Parti have formed an alliance and boycotted recent proceedings to protest the detention of council members.

A recent attempt to elect a new deputy mayor failed to reach a quorum due to the boycott and the absence of detained members. The election has been rescheduled for September 8, 2026.
