Kyiv and surrounding regions hit by Russian strikes amid air defense shortages
Russia launched a massive wave of drone and ballistic missile attacks targeting Kyiv and various Ukrainian regions, causing multiple casualties and significant infrastructure damage. In the Brovary district of the Kyiv region, a Russian drone strike destroyed a residential home, killing an elderly couple and their three-year-old grandson.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during an official visit to Belgrade, Serbia, reported that the strikes highlighted the critical depletion of Ukraine's air defense interceptors. He specifically called for more PAC-3 interceptors for Patriot systems and more anti-ballistic capabilities to prevent further civilian loss. Zelenskyy also urged allies to impose new sanctions to halt Russian ballistic missile production.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported intercepting 135 of the 151 drones launched overnight, though they were unable to stop all incoming ballistic missiles. Concurrently, Ukraine targeted Russian energy infrastructure, with debris from a drone strike causing a fire at the Ilsky oil refinery in the Krasnodar region, injuring several people.
