Four men detained in Poland over death of 13‑year‑old Mikołaj

The District Court in Kętrzyn, Poland, ordered three‑month pre‑trial detention for four men accused of killing 13‑year‑old Mikołaj near Lake Arklickie in the Barciany municipality on 16 May 2026. Investigators say one suspect repeatedly punched and kicked the boy’s head, causing fatal brain and lung injuries, while the other three helped corner the child and prevented his escape, also failing to render aid. All four face charges of causing serious bodily injury leading to death, failing to provide assistance, and attempted assault on another minor. Judge Adam Barczak, the court’s spokesperson, said, “Zgromadzony na tym etapie śledztwa materiał dowodowy wskazuje na duże prawdopodobieństwo, że podejrzani dopuścili się popełnienia zarzucanych im czynów.” The detention was deemed necessary to avoid interference with the ongoing investigation. The tragedy has prompted local mourning, with the village mayor urging restraint and the school establishing a memorial for the victim.
