Ecuadorian researchers discover four new frog species

Researchers from Ecuador, Spain, and the National Institute of Biodiversity (Inabio) have identified four new frog species of the Pristimantis genus in the Carchi province of Ecuador. The discovery, involving experts from the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, Complutense University of Madrid, and Inabio, highlights the biological importance of the region's mountain forests and paramos.

The new species are Pristimantis cantrix, Pristimantis carchi, Pristimantis levi, and Pristimantis marquezi. They belong to the Pristimantis myersi group, a collection of small terrestrial frogs known for high diversity and subtle morphological differences. To identify these cryptic species, scientists utilized a multidisciplinary approach combining morphological, acoustic, molecular, ecological, and biogeographical evidence.

Pristimantis cantrix was located at altitudes between 3,019 and 3,612 meters. Due to a known distribution of less than 100 square kilometers and threats from habitat fragmentation and deforestation, researchers propose classifying it as Critically Endangered (CR).
