Four new frog species discovered in the Peruvian Amazon

Four new species of frogs from the Oreobates genus have been discovered in the northern Peruvian Amazon. The findings, published in the scientific journal Diversity, identify the new species as O. azulensis, O. chirimoto, O. foliaspectrum, and O. nigrumcompletum.

One of the species, Oreobates azulensis, was located in the buffer zone of the Cordillera Azul National Park in the Huánuco region. Researchers noted that the species may also inhabit the interior of the national park, a possibility requiring further investigation. The discoveries were recorded across the Amazonas, Huánuco, and San Martín regions.

The research was a collaborative effort involving the Rainforest Partnership, the Peruvian Institute of Herpetology (IPH), the National University of San Antonio Abad of Cusco, and Florida International University. The National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp) stated that the discovery highlights how ecosystems near protected areas can still harbor unknown species, emphasizing the importance of scientific research for biodiversity conservation.
