Four new frog species discovered in the Peruvian Amazon

Scientists have discovered four previously unknown species of frogs in the Peruvian Amazon. The research, published in the international scientific journal Diversity, identifies the new species as Oreobates azulensis, Oreobates chirimoto, Oreobates foliaspectrum, and Oreobates nigrumcompletum.

The discoveries were made across the Amazonas, Huánuco, and San Martín regions. Researchers utilized morphological and genetic analyses to confirm that these frogs represent independent evolutionary lineages.

One specific species, Oreobates azulensis, was identified in the buffer zone of the Cordillera Azul National Park. This finding highlights the biological importance of protected areas and their surrounding zones in harboring undocumented wildlife. Further research is expected to determine if the species also inhabits the interior of the national park.
