CFB Wainwright fire kills four soldiers during training exercise

A fast-moving fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta killed four soldiers and injured 39 others during a combat training exercise on October 17. The incident occurred during high-intensity training involving Charlie Company of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry.

Military officials stated the fire was sparked on a grenade launcher range. High winds and a sudden shift in wind direction caused the flames to spread rapidly, traveling approximately one kilometre in 30 to 60 seconds. Because the blaze originated in a “permanent danger area,” firefighters were initially unable to combat it directly.

The deceased have been identified as Sgt. Morgan Wong, Pte. Shaun Farrell, Pte. Aidan Goulding, and Pte. Hayden Lykkemark. As of October 22, 27 soldiers remained hospitalized, with 13 reported to be in critical condition.

Multiple investigations are underway, including inquiries by the Canadian Forces Military Police, the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service, the RCMP, and a military board of inquiry. The military board of inquiry is expected to take significant time to complete its assessment of the circumstances.
