Four workers die in Morelia construction accident

Four construction workers died from asphyxiation after becoming trapped in a cistern (aljibe) at a building site in the Las Américas residential area of Morelia, Michoacán.

The incident occurred on Juan de Medina Rincón Street when a worker descended into the basement to perform technical work and immediately lost consciousness due to a lack of oxygen. In an attempt to rescue him, four colleagues entered the deposit one after another, losing consciousness due to gas accumulation.

During the emergency response, a municipal firefighter also fainted while attempting to assist. A second rescuer equipped with an oxygen tank managed to extract the firefighter and one worker alive. While paramedics performed resuscitation efforts, four workers were confirmed dead at the scene. The rescued worker remains in serious condition at a local hospital, and the injured firefighter is receiving medical treatment. The Fiscalía General del Estado de Michoacán has cordoned off the area to begin an investigation.
