Fox Corp. seeks $22 billion acquisition of Roku amid Democratic antitrust warnings

Senator Elizabeth Warren and other Democratic lawmakers sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice on July 17 urging an impartial antitrust review of Fox Corp.’s proposed $22 billion purchase of Roku, announced on June 15. The deal would combine one of America’s largest media conglomerates with the streaming‑hardware and platform company that reaches roughly 100 million U.S. households, creating the third‑largest TV business by viewing share.

Lawmakers warned that the merger could let Fox steer Roku users toward its own content, such as the free ad‑supported service Tubi, and diminish competition in the free‑streaming market. The letter quoted the Democrats saying, “Eliminating a significant competitor would reduce consumer choice for free streaming services and could give the combined entity market power to start charging for a previously free service.” They also asked for a DOJ review free from political interference.

Fox has pledged to keep Roku an open, partner‑friendly platform, and the companies said the transaction would be completed in the first half of 2027 pending regulatory approval.
