Foz do Chapecó dam and Misiones officials coordinate river flood prevention

Authorities from Misiones, riverside municipalities, and representatives from the Foz do Chapecó dam in Brazil held a binational meeting to coordinate actions regarding the Uruguay River. The meeting aimed to improve communication and manage potential fluctuations in river levels due to forecasts of rainfall exceeding usual records and the risk of new floods.

During the meeting, the manager of Foz do Chapecó provided technical explanations regarding the dam's operation and its flow regulation system. While the dam lacks the capacity to store massive volumes of water, officials reached an agreement to implement more gradual water releases. The proposed scheme involves progressive discharges, such as releasing 1,000 to 1,500 cubic meters per second every hour, to mitigate the impact on the river level.
