Foz do Iguaçu bus fares to increase to R$ 6

Bus fares in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, will increase by 20%, rising from R$ 5 to R$ 6 effective December 4. The adjustment was established by a decree from Mayor Joaquim Silva e Luna and applies to both electronic ticketing and cash payments.

The municipality stated the increase is based on the IPCA inflation index calculated between June 2022 and September 2026. The goal of the hike is to increase revenue to reduce the financial deficit of the public transport system and lower the monthly subsidies paid by the city to the operating company.

Data from the Social Observatory indicates that only 42.7% of boardings in August 2026 involved full fare payments, while 57.3% were classified as free rides or other tariff effects. The city administration previously informed the Chamber that approximately 54% of passengers utilize free transit modalities.

The current public transport operation is under a provisional contract that expires in March, and the city has announced a public bidding process for a new system model. Passengers who load their electronic cards by December 3 can use their existing balance at the old R$ 5 rate for 30 days following the price change.
