Foz do Iguaçu faces cemetery shortage as bodies await burial

Foz do Iguaçu is facing a critical shortage of cemetery spaces, leaving several deceased individuals awaiting burial for over a month. One 62-year-old man, who died on August 10, remains in the custody of the Scientific Police due to the lack of available public plots. Three other bodies are reportedly held at the Germano Lauck Municipal Hospital.

In response to a judicial order, the municipal government has presented an emergency plan to create 165 new burial spaces within the next 30 days. This plan includes expanding capacity at the Jardim São Paulo and Três Lagoas cemeteries. Additionally, the city has proposed a long-term structural plan to create more than 9,500 new spaces.

The crisis has prompted legal action, with Judge Rogério de Vidal Cunha noting a potential sanitary risk. The cemetery management company, Camis, has previously reported that the situation escalated to the point where bodies were being kept in cold storage. The city is also establishing a direct communication channel between the municipality, the Scientific Police, and the Death Verification Service to ensure bodies are buried within 24 hours of release.
