FPÖ accused of echoing Russian narratives in Austrian Parliament

A study by the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES) suggests that the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) frequently echoes Russian political narratives within the Austrian Parliament. Analyzing 54,000 speeches delivered between February 2022 and February 2025 in the National Council and various state parliaments, researchers identified five specific Russian disinformation narratives.

The findings indicate that the FPÖ was responsible for 97.2 percent of the affirmative speeches regarding these identified narratives in the National Council. One of the most prevalent themes was the claim that sanctions against Russia are ineffective and detrimental to the domestic population, a topic appearing 184 times.

EU Parliamentarian Helmut Brandstätter noted that the FPÖ's narratives closely align with those used by Russia. The FPÖ has expressed strong opposition to these findings and denies the allegations.
