FPÖ files motion of no confidence against Austrian government
The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), led by parliamentary group leader Herbert Kickl, has submitted a motion of no confidence against Chancellor Christian Stocker’s cabinet in the National Council. The motion is accompanied by an urgent inquiry questioning whether the current government remains capable of conducting its business.
The FPÖ cites several grievances, including reports that 96 government actions are being mutually blocked. The party also criticized the high costs of government administration, noting over 400 cabinet employees and 28 million euros in consultant fees.
Economic concerns form a central part of the opposition's argument. The FPÖ highlighted high inflation rates, a wave of insolvencies, and a rising unemployment rate, which reached 7.1 percent in September. They further noted that Austria's real economic output remains only slightly above 2019 levels, lagging behind the EU average. Additionally, the party criticized the high tax burden and an alleged erosion of internal security.
