Fractional Tech Talent Gains Traction in Gaming and Mid-Market Brands

Studios facing layoffs, hiring freezes and longer development cycles are turning to fractional talent as a middle ground between full‑time hiring and traditional consulting. In the gaming sector, Naavik has expanded from research and advisory into a Fractional Talent Network, offering senior specialists to fill roles such as lead designers, data analysts and technical directors. Co‑founder Aaron Bush explains that senior talent dominates the supply pool, that knowledge can be retained after engagements, and that the model may reshape studio staffing while raising concerns about pipelines for junior developers.

A similar trend is evident among mid‑market consumer brands, where fractional CTOs are now common. Mark Lewis, founder of Netalico, warns that many brands mistakenly treat these hires as generic technology leaders instead of seeking platform‑specific expertise. He highlights that decisions about commerce platforms, headless architecture, AI‑driven product recommendations and re‑platforming costs require experience with specific systems, not just senior engineering seniority.
