Fragmented candidacies threaten representation in Brazil's municipal elections

In the city of Morrinhos, former mayor Maycllyn Carreiro engineered a split of local political support among several state‑legislature candidates, including Novo's Leandro Ventura, former deputy Júlio Pina, Dennis Pereira and ALEGO president Bruno Peixoto. Carreiro also allowed his former rival Rogério Troncoso to run his wife Terezinha Amaral, creating at least three competing local tickets that could dilute the municipal vote. Projected vote totals range from roughly 8,000 for Ventura to about 12,000 for Joaquim Guilherme and 10,000 for Amaral.

In Maricá, the municipal administration backs a group of candidates for the Rio de Janeiro state assembly, notably incumbent Renato Machado, Zeidan and PT newcomer Allyson Elias. Opposition figures such as Fabinho Sapo (Republicanos), Luiz Júnior (PL) and former deputy Hélcio Ângelo (Avante) also seek votes, while other deputies with established support in the city, like Guilherme Delaroli, look to preserve their bases. The contest shows a fragmented field across parties, raising concerns that the city may struggle to elect a dedicated representative to the state legislature.
