Frailesca corn production threatened by severe drought

A severe drought in the Frailesca region of Chiapas is threatening corn production, with estimates suggesting that up to 40% of crops are already affected. Producers anticipate that this year's harvest could decrease by 20% to 30%. This region is a vital agricultural hub, having contributed nearly 30% of the national corn supply in previous cycles.

The lack of rainfall has disrupted agricultural calendars, delaying planting from mid-June to late June or early July. Local leaders, including the Archbishop of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, José Francisco González González, have called for urgent government intervention. Proposed measures include increasing resources for the agricultural sector, improving water catchment and distribution infrastructure, and establishing direct incentives for farmers.

Beyond immediate crop loss, the drought poses significant economic risks. Farmers face mounting debt from investments in seeds and fertilizers, which may lead to rural migration to cities or other countries. In areas like Villacorzo, the impact is already visible, with some crops failing to develop ears due to the prolonged dry spell.
