Framatome factory theft in Jarrie involves strategic hafnium crystals
A highly organized group of thieves broke into the Framatome plant in Jarrie, France, during the night of October 21-22, 2026. The perpetrators stole several hundred kilograms of hafnium crystals, with estimated damages ranging from three to ten million euros.
Hafnium is a critical and strategic metal used in nuclear reactors, high-tech devices, and defense systems. The Jarrie facility is the only unit in France capable of producing and refining the material, and it accounts for a significant portion of the world's refined hafnium supply. The metal is essential for the M88-2 turboreactors used in Rafale fighter jets, as well as for next-generation combat drones and nuclear submarines.
The theft marks the sixth such incident at this Seveso-classified site in seven years. Given that the thieves appeared to know the precise location of the stocks, investigators are looking into potential internal leaks or intelligence failures regarding the facility's supply chain.
