Framework cancels One Key Module; Microsoft to allow Copilot key reprogramming

Framework has announced the cancellation of its One Key Module project, which was intended to allow for the creation of custom, ultra-low-profile keyboards for the Laptop 16. After three years of collaboration with partner Lite-On, the company determined that the production costs per individual key made the project economically unviable for large-scale sales.

In addition to high material and assembly costs, developers reported difficulties with the module's reliability during assembly due to the fragility of certain components. Attempts to modify the design for better assembly would have exceeded the strict 4-millimeter height limit of the Laptop 16 chassis. Framework will provide remaining development modules to program participants free of charge and will keep design files and documentation available on GitHub.

Separately, Microsoft is introducing a way for users to reprogram the dedicated Copilot key on Windows 11 keyboards. Following criticism from users who found the replacement of the right Ctrl or context menu keys disruptive to their workflows, Microsoft will allow the key to be reassigned to those functions.
