Franca designated as Brazil's National Basketball Capital

The municipality of Franca, São Paulo, has officially been designated as the National Basketball Capital of Brazil. The title was formalized following the publication of Law 15.514 in the Official Gazette of the Union.

The legislation originated from a project by Deputy Renata Abreu and was reported in the Senate by Senator Marcos Pontes. The law recognizes Franca’s historical connection to the sport dating back to the 1940s, noting its role in developing athletes, coaches, and referees who have contributed to basketball both domestically and internationally.

Senator Pontes highlighted the significance of Sesi Franca Basquete, one of the country’s most successful teams, which has secured titles in the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB), the South American League, the Americas League, and the FIBA Intercontinental Cup. The city’s Pedrocão gymnasium is also cited as an emblematic venue for the sport. Beyond athletic achievements, the designation acknowledges the sport's cultural and economic impact on Franca, including its influence on local schools, social projects, job creation, and sports tourism.
