France 2 faces criticism over riot coverage reportage

France 2 is facing internal and external backlash following a last-minute decision to broadcast a twelve-minute report titled ‘Au cœur des violences’ during the October 18 evening news. The segment, presented by Laurent Delahousse, replaced a scheduled interview with the singer Angèle to focus on images of urban destruction, fires, and clashes between protesters and police.

The reportage has drawn sharp condemnation from labor unions, including the CGT, which labeled the footage a ‘propaganda clip’ and a ‘nauseating narrative.’ Union representatives argue that the segment lacked sufficient context and failed to adequately represent the protesters' grievances, focusing instead on scenes of chaos and property damage.

Internal tensions have risen at France Télévisions regarding the newsroom's decision-making process. Reports indicate the segment was produced urgently following a weekend of widespread unrest across France, leading to accusations from journalists' societies and unions about a lack of editorial balance and the rushed nature of the production.
