France: 239 gold coins discovered in ancient mansion

During the renovation of an ancient mansion in northwestern France, construction workers discovered a treasure of 239 gold coins hidden within a wall and above a beam. The coins were found in a metal box and a separate bag.

French archaeological authorities verified that the coins were minted during the reigns of Kings Louis XIII and Louis XIV. The oldest coin dates back to 1638, while the most recent was minted in 1692, making the collection over 300 years old. The hoard includes rare items such as a Louis gold coin featuring a Templar Cross and another minted at the Dijon workshop. One particularly rare coin is estimated to be worth approximately 15,000 euros.

The mansion, which dates back to the 13th century, was likely once owned by a wealthy merchant or farming family. The discovery occurred in the Brittany region, near the Iroise Sea, which was a significant trading hub during the 17th century.
