Abortion rights face practical barriers despite legal protections in France and Quebec
On the International Day to Protect Abortion Rights, reports highlight both legislative progress and practical barriers to reproductive healthcare in France, Quebec, and the European Union.
In France, despite the constitutionalization of abortion rights in 2024, the Planning Familial reports significant obstacles. Data indicates increasing wait times, with 72% of women waiting more than seven days for an appointment. Social stigma and professional refusals also persist, with one in two women facing a lack of support from healthcare providers.
In Quebec, five major political parties have committed to renewing the government action plan for abortion access through 2027. This plan focuses on improving care access, providing accurate information, and expanding services like telehealth for medication abortion.
Across the European Union, abortion is legal on request in 25 of the 27 member states, though Malta and Poland remain exceptions. While many countries are moving toward constitutional protections, such as France and Luxembourg, activists continue to call for EU funding to assist women who cannot access services in their home countries.
