France addiction care system faces strain from complex cases and staff shortages
The French addiction treatment system is facing significant challenges despite having a solid organizational foundation. A review by the General Inspectorate of Social Affairs indicates that while the model of integrating medical, psychological, and social care remains relevant, the system is under considerable strain.
Key issues identified include the increasing complexity of addiction cases, characterized by poly-substance use and psychiatric comorbidities. Furthermore, a shortage of healthcare professionals, particularly medical staff, is hindering the ability to refer stabilized patients to general practice and maintain consistent care pathways.
In response to these field realities, the Fédération Française d’Addictologie has launched the R.E.P.O.S. national survey. This initiative aims to map current practices regarding opioid substitution and identify specific needs and bottlenecks in care. The survey seeks input from a wide range of professionals, including doctors, nurses, social workers, and harm reduction workers, to inform future training and organizational improvements.
