French agriculture faces crisis as drought costs reach 15 billion euros
French agriculture is facing a catastrophic crisis due to historic drought, heatwaves, and wildfires. The Ministry of Ecological Transition estimates the total cost of these climate events between 10 and 15 billion euros. Production collapses have been reported in 90 departments, a level of impact described as unprecedented in thirty years.
In response to the financial strain, the Jeunes Agriculteurs (JA) union is calling for the implementation of a drought tax, similar to a measure used in 1976, to fund climate risk coverage and support farm adaptation. The union warns that many young farmers are at risk of ceasing operations due to the extreme hydric stress and heavy losses.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has identified agriculture as a top priority for the upcoming term. The government is reportedly considering two distinct strategies: an immediate support and rescue plan to help farmers through the winter, and a long-term recovery plan aimed at 2027. Emergency measures are expected to be announced by the Minister of Agriculture, Annie Genevard.
