France agriculture faces severe losses from summer climate extremes

The French Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty has released a preliminary assessment of the severe damage caused to the agricultural sector by extreme summer weather in 2026. The combination of heatwaves, persistent drought, and large-scale wildfires has resulted in significant economic consequences for farmers across the country.

Yield losses have reached critical levels in several territories, with some areas reporting reductions of 50% or more, and local losses reaching as high as 70% to 80%. Specific impacts include a 34% drop in grain maize and a 30% drop in forage maize. Certain vegetable productions, such as leeks, cauliflower, and garlic, have seen losses of 50%, while some small red fruits and non-irrigated crops have faced total losses of up to 100% in specific locations.

The livestock sector is also under pressure due to degraded pastures and low forage stocks. In most regions, permanent pasture growth is 36% below the 1989-2018 average. In response to these findings, the government is expected to announce support measures on September 3, which may include financial aid and regulatory relief to assist struggling farms.
