France agriculture faces drought impact and rise in imperfect produce
Extreme heat and drought in France have significantly impacted agricultural production, leading to a projected 0.1 point decrease in the nation's GDP for 2026. The Ministry of Economy estimates the total economic impact, including direct and indirect consequences, could range between 10 and 15 billion euros. Agricultural production is expected to decline by 8%, with corn production specifically facing a projected 35% drop.
The weather conditions have resulted in a high volume of “ugly” produce—fruits and vegetables that are smaller, irregularly shaped, or less colorful. In some cases, these imperfect products may constitute up to 70% of the harvest. This influx is benefiting anti-waste retailers and digital applications like Too Good To Go, which has seen its user base grow significantly.
In response to the shortage and the surplus of imperfect goods, major French retailers such as Leclerc, Auchan, Carrefour, Intermarché, and Casino are expected to increase their tolerance for non-standard produce. This shift aims to support farmers and reduce food waste by bringing products labeled under initiatives like “Les Gueules Cassées” to supermarket shelves.
