France allocates 30 million euros to expand senior autonomy residences
France is intensifying efforts to address the challenges of an aging population through increased investment in senior housing and improved support for vulnerable elderly citizens.
The CNSA and Assurance retraite have announced a new 30 million euro allocation for 2026 under the Initiative for the Development of Autonomy Residences (IDRA). This funding aims to expand the availability of secure, individual housing to prevent loss of autonomy and social isolation. Between 2022 and 2024, the program supported 137 projects, creating 4,599 new places. The 2026 initiative will provide 10,000 euros per new place, with increased support of 12,000 euros for projects in Corsica and overseas territories.
Separately, a report from IGAS highlights the growing challenge of supporting elderly individuals living in precarious conditions. The report notes that while the homeless population faces significantly lower life expectancy, the proportion of people over 60 in general and medicalized housing structures is increasing. These individuals often face complex, intersecting vulnerabilities involving social, economic, psychological, and physical health needs.
