France allocates new funds to renovate aging bridges after heatwave concerns

The French government announced a new funding package on 31 July to accelerate the renovation of the country's ageing bridges, a move prompted by recent heatwave conditions and a 2019 Senate report that described the state of many structures as "alarming". The report estimated 200 000‑250 000 bridges nationwide, with about 25 000 in poor structural condition and an average of five bridges per department needing replacement.

Previously, a single credit of €110 million was approved in 2021 under the national bridges programme managed by Cerema, which launched the "SOS Ponts" service. That initiative surveyed more than 64 000 works, repaired roughly 400, and supported the first beneficiaries, the Grand Est and Occitanie regions. The new envelope aims to provide up to €250 million per year for ten years, echoing a "Marshall plan" for local authorities to address climate‑related wear and improve safety.
