France and Spain Reject EU Return Centers for Migrants in Third Countries

French President Emmanuel Macron said France will not create "return centers" for migrants in third countries, calling the idea ineffective and contrary to European values. He added that he has never seen such a center work and will oppose the use of EU budget funds for them.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also announced Spain's opposition to the hubs, noting that they would waste scarce resources and that Europe lacks sufficient funds. He said Spain voted against the proposal, though it was in the minority.

The European Parliament recently approved a revision that would allow member states to sign agreements to set up return hubs outside the EU. Several countries, including Denmark, Italy and Austria, have expressed support for the scheme, arguing it would facilitate the repatriation of irregular migrants.
