Switzerland considers reducing highway speed limits to 80 km/h

Switzerland is considering a temporary reduction of highway speed limits from 120 km/h to 80 km/h to conserve fuel. The Federal Office for Economic Affairs (FONES) has submitted the proposal for internal consultation, though no final decision has been made by the Federal Council.

The measure would only be activated in the event of a serious fuel shortage. This comes amid a highly tense energy situation driven by geopolitical instability in the Middle East and disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, low water levels on the Rhine have hindered the transport of petroleum products by ship, which is a primary route for fuel entering Switzerland from Rotterdam.

To manage current tensions, Switzerland released 45 million liters of diesel from its mandatory reserves between late October and late November. This release represents approximately 4% of the country's mandatory reserves and is sufficient for about 900,000 tank refills of 50 liters each. Authorities are also encouraging citizens to use public transport and carpooling to mitigate consumption.
