France and US hot‑car incidents kill or endanger children

In Carpentras, southeastern France, two children aged two and four were found dead inside their mother's vehicle on 22 June. Preliminary investigations suggest the children may have opened the car door themselves and become trapped as interior temperatures rose to 39‑40 °C during a historic heatwave. Police are examining how the children entered the car, how long they were confined and whether any criminal negligence is involved.

A day earlier in Cypress, California, United States, 33‑year‑old Vannie Nguyen was arrested after leaving her four‑year‑old child alone in a turned‑off car for about 30 minutes in scorching weather. Bystanders rescued the child, who received emergency medical care. Police emphasized the rapid rise of temperature inside unattended vehicles and warned against leaving children or pets unattended.

Both incidents highlight the lethal risk that extreme heat poses to children left in cars and have prompted renewed safety warnings in the respective countries.
