France announces 521 million euro aid package for New Caledonia
The French government has announced a major financial assistance package for New Caledonia to address urgent economic instability and prevent a potential collapse of the territory's pension and medicare systems.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu revealed the plan following meetings with a bipartisan delegation led by New Caledonia President Milakulo Tukumuli. The total support is expected to reach approximately 521 million euros. This includes 11 million euros to cover end-of-year 2026 cash flow needs, 50 million euros to initiate the 2027 budget, and an additional 400 to 460 million euros in the 2027 initial finance law, primarily in the form of grants.
The territory faces significant debt following the COVID-19 pandemic and civil unrest in May 2024. The unrest resulted in 14 deaths, an estimated 2 billion euros in material damage, and a 13.5 percent drop in GDP. President Tukumuli has advocated for converting existing loans into non-refundable grants to mitigate the risk of a total financial shutdown.
