France appoints Wadid Benaabou as new Ambassador to Kenya

France has appointed Wadid Benaabou as its new Ambassador-designate to Kenya. Benaabou, a former senior adviser at France’s Court of Auditors, succeeds Arnaud Suquet, who has served in the role since 2022.

Upon announcing the appointment, Benaabou expressed his enthusiasm for the mission, addressing the Kenyan public in both Swahili and French. The transition occurs as France seeks to deepen its economic engagement in Kenya, including efforts to expand the footprint of French companies within the country.

In a related economic development, French shipping company CMA CGM has pledged €700 million (approximately Ksh106 billion) toward the modernization and expansion of terminals at the Mombasa Port.

Outgoing Ambassador Suquet will transition to a new role at the French Foreign Ministry focusing on Africa. Before officially assuming office, Benaabou must complete formal diplomatic protocols, including presenting his credentials to President William Ruto.
