France to release 10 million barrels of diesel to lower fuel prices

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has announced a series of emergency measures to address rising social unrest and economic pressures. To combat soaring fuel costs, the government will release 10 million barrels of diesel from its strategic reserves over the next three months. This move is expected to reduce diesel prices at the pump by 12 to 18 cents per liter.

To address energy concerns, Lecornu stated that electricity prices should not increase this winter. He has instructed the state-controlled utility EDF to maximize its production capacities to ensure stability. Additionally, the government will advance the payment of energy vouchers for low-income households to January.

These measures come amid significant political and social tension. The government is facing widespread student protests and agricultural discontent. Regarding the student crisis, Lecornu indicated that the first formal government decisions would be presented at the end of October.

Simultaneously, the 2027 budget debate has commenced in the National Assembly. The government aims to reduce the public deficit to 5% of GDP by 2027, a goal that faces intense scrutiny from deputies who have filed approximately 1,700 amendments. The budget discussions are occurring against a backdrop of rising national debt and market volatility.
