France begins reimbursing Wegovy and Mounjaro anti‑obesity treatments

From Monday 15 June 2026, France’s health insurance will cover 65 % of the cost of the GLP‑1 anti‑obesity drugs Wegovy (Novo Nordisk) and Mounjaro (Eli Lilly) for patients meeting strict prescription criteria. Only doctors in specialized obesity centers may issue the first prescription, and a secured form must accompany the order. Pharmacist Eric Myon said, "Il faudra vraiment qu’on s’assure que les ordonnances sont parfaites," highlighting the tight control.

The reimbursement programme targets up to one million eligible patients, but the Ministry of Health expects the actual uptake to be lower, estimating a total cost of €100 million for the Assurance Maladie in 2027. The French obesity market, worth over €150 million after the launch of Wegovy in October 2024, has grown more than twenty‑fold since 2024. Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly dominate the global market, with analysts forecasting worldwide sales of GLP‑1 weight‑loss drugs could exceed $100 billion by 2030.
